About my collections

I have a confession. I am a packrat. I collect things. From my stored-up-in-a-box 400+ cassettes from my younger years, to DVDs, to new formats of MP3s and movie files. From Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, Olivia Newton-John, ABBA to the new age Glee, Friends, Harry Potter (books and movies), Shopaholic etc. The list is endless. And I am still collecting..

Queer as Folk review

Posted : 12 years, 7 months ago on 26 August 2011 02:09 (A review of Queer as Folk)

A revolutionary tv series that is not apologetic about what it wants to deliver. It becomes a yardstick to what other queer tv shows have to be, in order to live up to the expectation to what how queer community is portrayed. Honesty is brutal.

South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut review

Posted : 13 years, 8 months ago on 13 August 2010 10:43 (A review of South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut)

It's marvelous how a film of mindless animation can catch the attention of many - of those who are followers and those who are against it (for the matured content). This animation is rude, vulgar and insulting, and yet strangely, entertaining. It is definitely not the typical Disney level film, served for family values. However, the film can still draw fans together to laugh silly at the daring humor thrown into the film.

The Expendables review

Posted : 13 years, 8 months ago on 13 August 2010 10:39 (A review of The Expendables)

Typical Stallone movie, where there is hardly any expectation on the plots other than to expect lots and lots of explosion. I was rather entertained by the fighting scenes/stunts and was really bored when the film went slow with the poor dialog. I think it is safe to say that audience who are expecting action-packed will not be disappointed. Some good fight scenes.

Salt review

Posted : 13 years, 8 months ago on 29 July 2010 01:30 (A review of Salt )

This is almost like Mr and Mrs Smith Part 2, minus Mr Smith (although an inclusion of Brad Pitt is very much welcome). I don't think anyone else can carry out Salt role as perfect as Angelina Jolie. She is a nail on for the tough lady act.

So, the story is about an American agent said to be an agent for Russia, secretly brought in to bring down the good relationship between America and Russia. Salt denies that she is an undercover for Russia and has to go all out to prove her innocence and to save her husband.

Action-packed all the way.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon review

Posted : 13 years, 8 months ago on 27 July 2010 03:55 (A review of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon)

This was the film that set the notion for rebuilding of interest in Eastern martial art, period piece among the Westerners. Ang Lee did a marvellous job in telling the story about a young, rebellious girl who wants to escape from her life, sentenced for loveless marriage. In her attempt, she bumps into two martial experts who in turn, care for her more than she has expected. However, due to her immaturity, one dies.

The Joy Luck Club review

Posted : 13 years, 8 months ago on 27 July 2010 03:50 (A review of The Joy Luck Club)

This movie is a gem. A powerful 8 short stories, compacted into a great movie. This movie tells the stories of 4 China-born mothers with their own American-born daughters. Each of the individual's hardship was portrayed beautifully, and it was amazing how the bitter past of the mothers instill strength into their own daughters' present turbulence.

Eat Drink Man Woman review

Posted : 13 years, 8 months ago on 27 July 2010 03:47 (A review of Eat Drink Man Woman)

Ang Lee (Brokeback Mountain, The Wedding Banquet, Hulk) tells a wonderful story here through his directing. It is a movie about a father's relationship with his 3 daughters. The first daughter is a born-again Christian, who has a tough chance with love. She is expected child to stay behind to take care of her father when the others move out. The second child is the difficult one, who has a mind of her own, and likes to argue with the father, including on the use of the kitchen. The third is still a young adult. I like how the dinner would be interrupted with 'I have an announcement to make...". I am surprised and delighted by the inserted humor in the film and it invites us all to dwell on a simple family, with real-life happenings. I think this is Ang Lee's best.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid review

Posted : 13 years, 9 months ago on 24 July 2010 04:10 (A review of Diary of a Wimpy Kid)

Love it. It borrows the formulas of other stories - you know, a kid wants to be popular in the school, he has a nasty older brother, he thinks his best friend is not cool enough and he wants new cool friends.. but this is one of the few movies that make the formula works.

Will & Grace review

Posted : 13 years, 9 months ago on 22 July 2010 03:18 (A review of Will & Grace)

I miss them. From the hilarious Jack, to the always high and funny Karen, to the always hungry Jew-obsessed Grace and the well-mannered Will, there was always a plot in every episode to make one smile.
